Trial Ground at Thornhaugh

Applied research is the prime activity of PGRO and undertaken on a national basis.  Some trials are undertaken by PGRO's own team of technical staff whilst others are contracted to appropriate bodies.

The programme is reviewed annually by expert representatives from all sides of the industry, with guidance from the Director and senior members of staff.

PGRO through crop levies funds Recommended List variety trials for Peas, Spring beans and Winter beans.  Descriptive List work is also conducted for Spring lupins.

Most of the research is undertaken through field trials and experiments and about half of these are conducted on the Organisation's trial ground at Thornhaugh, 8 miles west of Peterborough.  The remainder are located in the main production areas to take into account differences in climate and soil types.

Investigations include:

  • The evaluation of new crop protection products and their development, in association with manufacturers
  • The evaluation of new varieties in a range of environments
  • The study of seed vigour, health and protection
  • Husbandry requirements for each crop
  • The control and commercial significance of pests, diseases and disorders
  • Machinery evaluation
  • Crop management and timing
