PGRO’s contract trials work for clients may be less well-known, but it is as valuable as the organisation’s well-known and respected trials work that is the industry reference point for the evaluation of peas and beans - and other crops - including onions, parsnips, carrots and brassicas.

Roger Vickers, PGRO Chief Executive explains: “for our contract trials work, we draw on that same wealth of experience to design, conduct and deliver bespoke, robust, cost-effective and fully randomised field trials and glasshouse evaluations for our clients.

“As well as varieties, the work can include key inputs such as pesticides, fertiliser, seed treatments and bio-stimulants. All of this using our two geographically separate trials areas and, if needed, over 40 other sites throughout England and in Scotland. There is also the reassurance from our GEP and GLP accreditation.

“This work is followed through by comprehensive trials reports with appropriate statistical analysis - and as an independent research-based charity, clients can be assured of compete confidentiality when required.

“Or, by contrast, if communication to the trade and growers is the objective, PGRO’s participation in an extensive autumn and winter KT programme, means that promising and robust results can be communicated quickly ?to the industry. ?

“The trials work is complemented by our laboratory where a full range of seed tests for peas, beans and other crops, as well as soil tests to predict the level of risk from foot rot in advance of drilling.

“The quality and dependability of our trials is underpinned by our extensive range of specialist field trials equipment including self-propelled and tractor-mounted plot drills, Wintersteiger plot combines, compressed air handheld spray equipment, 6m and 12m tractor-mounted sprayers, Hege seed treating equipment and static pea viners.

“PGRO has ?been involved in legume research over nearly 70 years and is recognised as the UK centre of excellence for work with peas and beans. Our contract work gives clients access to the skills and many years of experience of the whole PGRO team and their unique industry insight and contacts,” adds Roger Vickers.
